Strictly speaking, a poet is a writer of poetry, that is, of texts that follow versification and contrast, at least ideally, with prose texts. It might seem simplistic to say that what a poet does is write poetry, but that is the essence of the art form. What else a poet can do depends largely on a number of factors, such as his fame, professionalism or delight, the type of training the person has, and whether the poetry writing job is full-time or a raise to other jobs. Poets also come from different backgrounds. A true artist may squat in a prison cell finding the right words, another may practice his art in poverty, some poets spend a short moment between naps to write a verse, yet other artists attend state dinners and appear on Oprah. Education and guidance range from those barely able to write to those with doctoral degrees. This returns to the simple description that the poet writes poems. Given the opportunities available, such artists may get to do their jobs full-time and may even get paid for it. Poetry is not an extremely popular art form in many places, and gaining recognition can be difficult. Artists might start by submitting their pieces to small poetry magazines, and if they're very lucky, some of the few publishers who recognize poetry might publish a book of their works. Greater recognition could be shared in a career.
