Political Science Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in The Graduate School Policy Guide.

PhD Courses: Units
  • POLI SCI 403 Introduction to Probability and Statistics*: 1
  • POLI SCI 405 Linear Models*: 1
  • Courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies: 16

Total Required Units: 18

*(Political Theory students are occasionally exempt from the requirement to take POLI SCI 403 and 405.)

Other PhD Degree Requirements
  • Research Paper Requirement: Scholarly paper in second year
  • Examinations: written qualifying examinations on student's major and minor fields,
  • Prospectus: dissertation research design presented during the quarter after passing qualifying examination; dissertation based on independent research
  • Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation
  • Other: teaching requirement begins in second year in an undergraduate course
