Politics and Philosophy presents to us the major preoccupations of human existence; what is the good life? How can we judge between right and wrong? For some traditions in philosophy the civic life or the life of the state was the way to operationalize the good life and to develop fully human potential. Therefore, the two subjects overlap and interconnect well in their consideration of how people should live and how they can come together as citizens.
The foundation year of this course is designed to offer applicants who do not have the required qualifications, a programme which will equip them with a robust toolkit of academic, digital and personal skills required for successful study in higher education. It also provides an understanding of, and insight into, a range of disciplines that underpin their chosen programme of study. In the foundation year students will develop their ability to gain the most out of structured in-class study, and also to manage and evaluate their own independent learning. This wide range of transferable skills is of immense value in both undergraduate study and graduate employment. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of their subject area to degree level.

About this course
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
Organise (materials, time-frames, formats, etc.) and gather information from a variety of sources.
Employ a range of written, oral and digital resources in the research, articulation and presentation of scholarly and academic work;
Demonstrate a familiarity with specialised subject vocabularies, drawing connections between ideas, concepts, arguments and theories within Politics and Philosophy;
Display a critical self-awareness and openness to reasoned dialogue with others in a multi-cultural and international context whilst learning to act independently;
Demonstrate key employment skills (eg. self-management, IT, digital literacy, enterprise, working in groups);
Appreciate the historical development of the major traditions in Politics and Philosophy.
