The polygraph is that professional figure engaged in writing on different and sometimes disparate topics, a term attributed to many writers who flourished in the first half of the sixteenth century, immediately after the invention of printing, who earned their living in a publisher with their own work or by taking care of other people's work. From a chronological point of view, polygraphs were very numerous in antiquity, especially in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; they become progressively rarer in the modern and contemporary age mainly due to the development of specialization also in literature. As examples of polygraphs of antiquity we can cite Plutarch, the author as well as the biographies collected in the Parallel Lives, of about 80 other works, known as Moralia, of various topics and genres (rhetoric, politics, religion, science, literature, etc.). Among the Renaissance polygraphs we can mention Doni, in whose impressive literary production we find short stories, plays, fairy tales, biographies, essays in literary criticism, bibliographic repertories, essays on the figurative arts or on music, letters, encyclopedias, etc. Among the modern polygraphs we can mention Carlo Amoretti author of legal essays, scientific essays on the most disparate topics, works of history, travel reports, etc.
