Course programme
Course detail Description
Our research builds on the outstanding legacy of population and public health, environmental and forensic sciences, general practice, epidemiology and statistical research at King’s. It encompasses Analytics (broadly defined as the discovery and interpretation of meaningful patterns in quantitative and qualitative data), Investigation (broadly exploring analytical solutions to complex problems at the individual as well as population level) and Applied Research (broadly using analytics, including laboratory investigations, to identify needs and propose and evaluate new solutions to global societal health and social problems).
We are forging new connections between pure, social and data science to advance our understanding of disease and improve health and care for patients and populations.
The School is integrated with major National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) infrastructures. We lead the data analytics cluster within the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Guy’s & St Thomas’ and the Stroke and Public Health themes within the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) South London.
We host the NIHR Research Design Service London, the NIHR Clinical Research Network National Speciality Hub and jointly host the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Health Impact of Environmental Hazards and the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment & Health with Imperial College London.
Our academic work of transformative research, education, clinical practice, consultancy and external collaboration is embedded across two departments:
- Analytical, Environmental & Forensic Sciences
- Population Health Sciences
Course study environment
Students work alongside researchers and are supervised by two members of academic staff all overseen by a Departmental postgraduate research co-ordinator and the School postgraduate research lead.
Postgraduate training
All students are regularly notified about skills development opportunities through a monthly Postgraduate Research Newsletter. Participation in the annual Postgraduate Research Symposium is compulsory for all students and provides an opportunity to improve science communication and presentation skills. All postgraduate students present their research in seminars to the whole Department as well as to their research groups. Opportunities are available for postgraduate students to present their work at national and international scientific meetings. Our postgraduate students also assist with teaching of undergraduates as demonstrators in practical classes or leading tutorials.
Head of group/divisionProfessor Charles Wolfe OBE
