Year 1

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

There are no optional modules in your first year, as we give you a broad introduction into the language and countries you are studying. Required Modules

In your first year you are required to take:

• Core French Language (30 credits)
• Introduction to French Literature (30 credits)

Portuguese

• Core Portuguese Language (30 credits)
• Global Iberias (30 credits)

Optional Modules There are no optional modules in year one.

Year 2

Year 2

You will take the required modules outlined plus two options in French and two options in Portuguese.

Choose two modules (totalling 30 credits) from a range of options that may include:

• Death & Desire: Love in French Literature before 1700 (15 credits)
• Writing the Self in French Literature since 1700 (15 credits)
• French poetry since 1800 (15 credits)
• Comedy in French Literature before 1700 (15 credits)
• The Idea of France (15 credits)
• The French novel after 1700 (15 credits)
• Modernity and the City (15 credits)
• French Political Thought II (15 credits)
• Writing Africa: Anglophone, Francophone (15 credits)

Portuguese

Choose two modules (totalling 30 credits) from a range of options that may include:

• Visuality, Literature and Modern Life in Latin America (15 credits)
• Fatherlands: Spain and Portugal under the Dictators (Modern) (15 credits)
• 19th Century Fiction in Brazil and Portugal
• Power, God and Race - The Writings of Medieval Portugal (15 credits)

Year 3

Your third year will be spent abroad, normally for one semester in a French-speaking country and one in a Portuguese-speaking country. If you choose to study, then we have an extensive list of partner institutions which you may attend, which currently include:

You may also choose to apply for the English Language Assistantship Programme, or to undertake an internship or work placement in a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking environment, which you will normally arrange yourself, allowing you to explore career prospects and fields of personal interest.
