Delivered by an Ofsted rated “Outstanding” provider of PGCE teacher training, this one year postgraduate course will recommend you, on completion, for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with full PGCE, to teach children aged 3-7 in primary or infant schools.

We work closely with over 500 partnership schools to prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, including delivery of the curriculum for EYFS and the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1.

You will be taught and supported by highly experienced tutors, class teachers and school mentors who have a strong reputation for the quality of their training.

About this course

Upon completing this course you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and will gain 90 credits at master's level. This allows you to fast-track to stage two of CTE’s master's degree, quickly progressing your professional development.

Career progression may be through taking responsibility for coordinating an area of the curriculum or leading a Key Stage, with next steps being a senior management role.

Course programme

Core Modules:

There are three elements* to the course which are designed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills you will need to pursue a successful teaching career.

Professional Studies - develops a good understanding of the key factors in successful learning and teaching. It deals with central issues of planning, teaching, assessing and behaviour management as well as addressing such issues as safeguarding of children.

Subject Studies - covers delivery of the curriculum for Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1. We aim also to prepare you for teaching across the whole of the National Curriculum. You will take part in sessions in History, Geography, RE, Art, Design and Technology, Music, PE and Computing.

Professional Practice for University-Led (Core):
  • Three extended placements - in contrasting settings (25 days, 25 days and 40 days respectively
  • Experiential days - mini-placements (focusing on EAL, SEN, Phonics, Outside Learning Contexts)
  • Serial Days -11 further days of observation
  • Special School Experience - a week of observation in a Special School
Professional Practice for School-Led (School Direct Training & Salaried)*

One main school placement (called a Base School), supplemented by an additional placement (minimum of five weeks) in a contrasting school.
