Course programme

Course review:

Learn the basics of restoring pottery and porcelain. Our 1-week course can either equip you with the skills and knowledge which will enable you to undertake a particular ceramic restoration project, or it can act as a foundation for a more complete and in-depth course of study.

Among the skills covered are:-

  • Identifying types of Ceramics and deciding on the appropriate materials and techniques to use
  • Cleaning pieces and dismantling old repairs
  • Assembling and gluing broken items
  • Consolidating hairline cracks
  • Repairing chips and other minor damage
  • Modelling missing parts
  • Molding missing parts from existing ones
  • The achievement of differing glaze finishes (high gloss to dead matt, pearlized, etc.)
  • Hand-painting and glazing
  • Air-brushing demonstration
  • Air-brushing (time permitting)

Some of the topics will not be dealt with in great depth, and some may even be missed out altogether if your particular area of interest does not require them.

All tools and materials are provided, but you will need to bring a selection of pieces with a range of faults to repair (we suggest that you do not bring a £2000 Worcester vase as you first item!). Charity shops are an ideal souce of suitable pieces.

We will provide you with comprehensive notes, which include details of suppliers of materials and equipment which you will need to be able to continue once the course is over.

We also provide a light lunch and an endless supply of tea and coffee!
