AIM

To meet the legal requirements imposed by the Power Presses Regulations 1965 and 1972 in relation to the training of Power Press Setters.

COURSE CONTENT

The Power Presses Regulations 1965 and Power Presses (Amendment) Regulations 1975 require that Power Presses are regularly checked for safety and lay down requirements for systematic inspection, periodic examination and testing, with regard to both the machine and its tooling.

It is essential that ALL personnel having responsibility for these activities are fully aware of their LEGAL DUTIES and the PROCEDURES involved.

Introduction - Course objectives and arrangements.

Accident Causation - The costs of accidents with Power Presses. Accident causes and their prevention.

The Power Press Regulations - A detailed insight into the legal requirements.

Power Press Mechanisms - The function of the Power Press. Explanation of Press features (flywheel, ram, clutch function, brake function,) ancillary equipment - feeders, conveyors etc. Clutch mechanisms, brake mechanisms, recognising potential malfunction.

Power Press Safety Devices - The design and function of fixed guards, interlocking and automatic guards and the photo-electric cell. The concept of closed tool. Methods of inspection, thorough examination and maintenance.

Tooling - Tool design, tool setting and safety, operator instructions.

The Work of The Toolsetter - Setting principles, positioning of the Pitman, clamping principles, setting for clearance, lubrication. Setters role in routine maintenance, instructing the operator.

OBJECTIVES

On completion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Appreciate the causes and costs and prevention of accidents associated with the operation of Power Presses and Press Brakes.

2. Understand fully the requirements of the Power Presses Regulations (1965) and the Power Press (Amendment) Regulations (1975).

3. Recognise a range of different Power Presses and Press Brakes and relate to the legal definition of a Power Press and understand their mechanical function.

4. Describe main features and controls of the Power Press and Press Brake including a range of methods of guarding and application of safety devices.

5. Appreciate the influence of tooling design on press safety.

6. Carry out the inspection test of Power Press and Press Brake safety devices in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations.

7. Carry out routine maintenance procedures in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations.

8. Appreciate basic principles of press setting and the setters role.
