Immediate start and complete as normal in around 6-8 hours or over time and then you can come back for more tips and tricks, updates plus join one of our monthly LIVE Meet the Trainer sessions over the years subscription. Taking you from novice to expert but staying with you all the way! The 6 core demonstration videos on the vein are included with the Vein so they are always with you via a quick QR scan.

Please note you have ONE FULL year access from the point we activate your e-learning subscription. This is usually activated once the vein is delivered but can be immediate or within a year of the booking to suit (see dates).

So if you want ultimate convenience: (a) practical experienced alive training but not LIVE on a set day, then e-learning asynchronous course is for you. Suitable for all levels from novice to updating expert or those never formally taught. Once you have completed your e-learning you take your competency booklet (PRO) to the clinical area to apply your learning with patients, guided toward competency using your structured learning programme booklet, supported by your supervisor. Those on LITE, online only can download the OSCE competency assessment tool.

VeinTrain Cannulation and Venepuncture Learning Objectives Methods of course delivery: E-learning/Online Practical VeinTraining Aim To provide learners with the knowledge and skills that underpin peripheral intravenous cannulation (PIV) and venepuncture. Objectives:  The learner will develop an understanding of the implications of the Scope of Professional Practice in relation to this role development.  The learner will have an awareness of the issues around the clinical risk, legal and professional accountability for (PIV) cannulation and venepuncture.  The learner will be aware of the infection prevention and control issues in relation to (PIV) cannulation and venepuncture.  The learner will identify different anatomy of veins, arteries, associated structures and common sites as well as indications for cannulation and venepuncture.  The learner will be able to identify the issues around equipment selection and how the equipment works.  The learner will practically apply knowledge and skills for (PIV) cannulation and venepuncture on their own vein simulator and gain clinical competency using the structured learning programme.

Sarah trained as a nurse in Glasgow in 1993. A clinical background in Emergency Nursing & 7 years in Corporate Nursing at a top NHS Foundation Trust. Sarah worked for the Director of Nursing & Director of Clinical Studies (Imperial College School of Medicine) as Lead Nurse Multi-professional Practice Education. She developed the Clinical Skills Service for the Trust from 1999-2006, Sarah led a project to improve competency rates in venepuncture and cannulation and succeeded with a 98% competency rate rising from 40% previously.  Sarah founded Vein Train Ltd in 2007.

Course programme


You may complete your education in as little as 2 hours to update or complete key areas or you may do one full e-learning course by clicking next for our usual course of 7.5 hours. You can also add to your learning over the full year access, dropping in to review content or do some more workshops with your vein. You can even attend a live workshop to ask questions and use your vein to show what you are struggling with or ask for a demo. On the Pro 1 plus LIVE this is included. The LIVE blend is the best of all worlds we think. You have a full year and a half day commitment in a group to learn LIVE online together. It is up to you. We can meet your need for the new NMC Regisration requiremetns - we offer ability assessment and full curriculum with superivsion.
