About this course
Students under 19 must already have a D at GCSE. Students without this may take a 1 year pre-GCSE course, followed by GCSE. Adults over 19 without GCSEs may offer alternative qualifications or do a short piece of writing so that we can assess whether GCSE is the most appropriate course for you to study.

Is the course for me?
The course aims to help you read and write, speak and listen effectively - in other words, to become an effective communicator.
What will I learn?
A wide variety of texts will be used to help you develop your reading and writing skills , for example: newspaper, magazine articles and advertisements. You will read, discuss and write about several literary texts such as: extracts from autobiographical writing by authors such as Meera Syal; short stories on a supernatural theme by Charles Dickens and H.G. Wells; Macbeth by William Shakespeare. You will take part in discussion and debate, and be encouraged to express your own opinions. After Christmas, your skills in speaking and listening will form part of the assessment for your final GCSE grade.
How will I be assessed?
Written and oral coursework and two examinations.
What can I do after the course?
GCSE English is an essential base for being able to communicate well. Most A level subjects require you to have English at GCSE grade C; many places of employment insist on this as a minimum entry requirement, as do many universities.
