This is course is designed for students whose first language is not English, and who already have IELTS 5.0 or equivalent, to able to reach the English language level required for entry to the University of Wolverhampton. In addition, the course introduces international students to the learning context in the UK and to the academic skills necessary for study in Higher Education. This is an intensive English language course taught by qualified and experienced teachers of English for Academic Purposes. The International Academy is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK and our intensive programme focuses on enabling the students to achieve their aim of progressing to a degree at the University of Wolverhampton. Regular one-to-one tutorials and practice assessments allow students to see how they are progressing and seek advice from our experienced staff.

Course programme

Listening: understanding authentic spoken material in a variety of media and styles including lectures, seminars and academic discussions; taking notes and summarising; becoming familiar with different accents and speaking styles including those of classmates.

Writing: developing academic voice, expressing and supporting opinions; presenting, developing drafting, editing and error correction skills; developing academic referencing skills.

Reading: examining in detail academic and other texts; developing strategies for deriving meaning and understanding form complex texts.

Speaking: speaking at length in academic contexts; taking part in discussions and seminars.

Critical skills: Finding and evaluating a range of academic sources.

Formative assessment: each of the four elements (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will be assessed at the midpoint in order to give a progress report and tutorial.
