Based around the biomedical sciences, the Certificate of Higher Education Premedical Sciences gives you the knowledge and qualifications to progress to studying medicine or another related honours degree course. It can lead to many different employment opportunities, including research and development work in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, as well as training for a career as a doctor.
Why study our course?
This challenging one-year international Premedical Sciences course has been co-developed by UWE Bristol and St. George's University (SGU) in Grenada, West Indies. Taught in Bristol, it provides an exciting route if you are a student with A-level science qualifications or the equivalent to gain the knowledge and entry qualification for progression to the high quality, internationally recognised, four year Medical Programme at SGU. Alternatively, you will also have the option to join the BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science at UWE Bristol, gaining entry onto Year two of the course.
Real-world experience
With access to outstanding laboratory facilities, the course covers the areas of human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics that underpin an understanding of human health. Benefiting from the additional input of leading external medical practitioners throughout the course, you will be prepared academically and professionally to subsequently undertake a medical degree. At SGU, your final two years will be spent on clinical placements at hospitals in the USA or Canada or in the UK.
Where it can take you
After successfully completing the course, you will be awarded a UK Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE), which can lead you to a large choice of careers, from positions in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors to roles in research and education. Course programme
The following modules cover aspects of human anatomy and physiology, along with the biology, microbiology and genetics that underpin an understanding of human health and which will prepare you both academically and professionally to subsequently undertake a medical degree.
Year one
You will study the following compulsory modules:

- Cell Biochemistry and Genetics (Premedical Sciences)
- Pathophysiology of Disease (Premedical Sciences)
- Biomedical Skills
- Molecular Biology for Medicine (Premedical Sciences)
- Professional Studies for Medicine (Premedical Sciences).
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a UK Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE). As well as progression onto the SGU Medical Programme, this can be used as an advanced entry qualification for courses at UWE Bristol.

Learning and TeachingThe Department of Applied Sciences is evolving a culture of student-centred learning, supported by learning packages and a web-based Virtual Learning Environment. Guided independent learning is very much encouraged and a framework for this is provided through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Practical classes are also very important in supporting learning, with both laboratory and computer-based sessions.
Your tutors are all engaged in research and other scholarly activity, working across a range of disciplines relevant to the medical field. They will support your learning and encourage you to develop so that you can successfully move on to undertake the medical degree at SGU.

AssessmentEach taught module is assessed by written examination and coursework. Coursework may be in the form of practical case studies, hospital visits, study packs, posters, reports and oral presentations. You must achieve an overall score of 65%, with a minimum of 60% in each module, and receive a recommendation from the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences to progress to a medical degree at SGU.
