The Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) award is for those who are or who want to be a teacher, tutor or trainer and need to be able to plan, prepare and implement learning for a specialist area. PTLLS is the initial award, which has been developed to provide a threshold license to teach in the FE sector in England. Additional benefits of the PTLLS award are that you automatically become an IFL Member when you pass the course. (Institute for Learning, 2010) From passing this award you can then put AIFL letters after your name and potential employers will recognize your membership and qualification. This award also leads to higher education courses at Level 5, such as the DTLLS this is equivalent to the old Cert ED or in-service PGCE. This is possibly something you never thought you would ever do or achieve when you left school with a handful of GCSE’s or A Levels? For those people considering this course and qualification it can be quite daunting as after all it might be a million miles away from your specialism, such as hairdressing, holistic treatments or else plumbing. However don’t let this put you off, as the course is designed to be a taster for you not necessarily a full blown teaching qualification. Level 3 PTLLS Online Course & Attended Micro Teach Workshop This Level 3 course can be completed online over two weeks, with online tutor support and interaction and a practice micro teaching workshop completed at the weekend to complete the course. The micro teach workshop will be held in North Yorkshire. Courses start regularly each week, micro teach sessions are agreed with learners during the course. The course comprises of two main sections: Theory completed with your allocated tutor, this is online and requires a PC with Internet connection and webcam at home or work. Course access is 24/7 via Moodle and our bespoke eLearning software. Practical micro teaching workshop at the weekend in North Yorkshire, 10.00am – 2.30pm. There are THREE components to the course, which learners must complete: 1. Practical micro teaching session (15 minutes) 2. Complete x 3 Assignments 3. Forum interaction with peers and research using our online and free learning resources e.g.: MOODLE. Entry to the course is via an application form initial assessment and possibly a telephone interview with the Course Tutor especially if you have any prior learning in the same subject. This qualification satisfies the government requirement for teachers, tutors and trainers to hold an award in preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector. It can be undertaken by those who want to teach in an FE College, tutor in an Adult and Community Learning Centre or be a trainer for a Learning Provider or by those who need an initial award for their current role as a teacher, tutor or trainer in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Learners will gain knowledge and understanding of the teacher’s role and approaches to teaching and learning, plan learning sessions and manage learning. The achievement of the Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector will confirm that they have shown that they have a good understanding of the essential aspects of the teacher/trainer role, can organise and manage effective learning and have developed professionally through on-going reflection and evaluation. Aim: This qualification aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding required for teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector. Objectives: The objectives of the qualification are to help learners to: Understand the roles and responsibilities of the teacher Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist area Plan, deliver and evaluate a micro-teach session Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping Progression: For those working in the teaching sector once you have passed your PTLLS with us you can progress to the DTLLS and this can be achieved over 1 year working in house and over distance via our IMLE (Interactive Managed Learning Environment), e.g.: Moodle. This course requires 150 hours teaching work and can be partially funded by your employer or the local education authority. The completion of the PTLLS course eliminates the PEL Unit in the DTLLS course and you can then concentrate on the other DTLLS units to pass this higher award. Cost: The cost of the course is £275 all inclusive. Please note to complete the online element of the course, you will need to have access to a pc with internet connection and a webcam. To successfully complete the practical element of the course, you must attend an agreed micro teach session, these are held regularly in North Yorkshire at the weekend.. Once you have been given an allocated place for your micro teach, if you do not come to your scheduled session and do not inform us then it means that you will need to re-book your session and incur additional costs..
