"The priest is a minister of religious worship. In the Catholic religion he embodies his specific office and is raised to carry out a religious function. The priest carries out an activity that is often comparable to a religious mission. The presbyter, therefore the priest, and the bishop are considered priests, but the deacon is excluded. As with any profession, even that of the priest, albeit connected to spirituality, needs its own formation and constant updating. In the Catholic Church, the priest is a minister of worship who has received the second or third degree of the sacrament of Holy Orders. Properly, therefore, the presbyter (or in a contract form priest) and the bishop are considered priests, but not the deacon. In fact, however, the expression is used as a synonym for presbyter, the latter word considered preferable as it is more precise and detailed than a priest. In the Jewish religion the priest is a religious figure in charge of the exercise of the cult, called ""avodah"", and the mediation of relations with the divinity; he dates back in particular to the sacrificial service at the Temple in Jerusalem. Kohanim currently retain an important status within Judaism and are bound by additional restrictions based on the traditions of Orthodox Judaism and Halakhah (Jewish Law). In short, the only priestly functions left are the priestly blessing and the collection of the ransom of the firstborn; the only priestly privileges still in force are the honor due to them, the precedence in the ascent before the Levite with the reading of the Torah in the synagogue cult, which should be recited by anyone who is called to read, obviously of the Jewish religion. According to Orthodox Judaism, with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE and the cessation of Jewish sacrifices, most of the priestly functions are suspended, pending the reconstitution of the III Temple by the Messiah.
