About this course

Ideally, maths and English GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or higher or an equivalent qualification are required. In order to be selected for this apprenticeship, you will need to have a passion for working in a hands-on or creative environment within this exciting trade. Finally, you must have the drive to complete the demands of the apprenticeship course and become a skilled machine printer, print finisher, artworker, designer or pre-press operative. You will also need to demonstrate commitment to learning while working and spending 20% of your working hours completing off-the-job training.

Course programme

Year 1

This year covers health and safety modules but you will be exempt if you have completed this at level 2 for the technical certificate. Within the design elements of digital artwork and pre-press, you will learn industry-specific software such as Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. As a printer and print finisher, you will also have a hands-on approach working on the college’s equipment on various tasks. With these practical skills, you will also learn about health and safety, productivity and quality assurance and then your chosen discipline. You will learn how to communicate effectively at a high level and contribute towards improved working methods. It looks at how you organise your work and then focuses on the selected pathway competencies within print. You will be required to sit written exams and during this programme, you will develop your English and maths skills to level 2.

Year 2

Towards the end of your programme you will be confident at managing your equipment and have a detailed understanding of your role and how it it influences the business. You will have advanced knowledge of your processes and the technical aspects of the industry.

Additional information

During your technical certificate (theory) you will be assessed three times. One will be using an online multiple choice examination for health and safety and the other two exams will be written. You will also be observed within your working environment by an experienced print trainer assessor. They will ensure that you stay on track and support you with completing your NVQ portfolio of evidence. They will also provide you with feedback on how you are progressing and provide you with advice and guidance throughout your learning journey.
