The prison guard is part of the Penitentiary Police Corps, a civil police body part of the Italian law enforcement agencies, dependent on the Penitentiary Administration Department of the Ministry of Justice. This professional figure carries out the tasks of judicial police, public security, traffic police and the management of persons subjected to measures of restriction or limitation of personal freedom. It also carries out traffic police activities pursuant to art. 12 of the Highway Code, participates in the maintenance of public order, carries out judicial police and public security activities even outside the penitentiary environment, as well as all other police forces, carries out escort activities to protect institutional personalities ( Minister of Justice, state secretaries) and magistrates.
