This is part of a set of study options within the postgraduate Engineering Career and Capability Development Framework (ECCDF). The concept behind the Framework is to offer you flexibility in the modules you study, and the opportunity to move freely between award routes based on your career goals.
You choose your own course of study to meet your specific needs, with modules mapped directly to UK-SPEC, so you effectively create your own bespoke MSc award. The MSc Professional Engineering helps you identify learning that supports your personal development and, where applicable, meets your sponsor's capability requirements. Alignment of all modules to UK-SPEC competencies ensures skill gaps are identified and addressed easily.
However you approach the course, we're here to help support your long term professional career development, this may include helping you develop a 'portfolio of evidence' to support your application to become a Chartered Engineer.
Peer learning and support
Many of the modules bring together students from a range of Master's engineering and management courses. This widens the scope of the learning and provides a strong learning experience, mixing technical and business skills with management capabilities.

Course programme

Content

The full Master's course comprises 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

While there is inherent flexibility to your studies, the course has three core modules:

  • Engineering Project Management
  • Professional Development Appraisal and Continuous Review
  • Research Investigation, Planning and Methods for Change

If you're planning to take the MSc study course and use it to provide the academic part of your portfolio of evidence for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, check with the relevant professional institution that your module selection meets their requirements.

To achieve the MSc you'll require eight 15-credit modules from Professional and Short courses, including the core modules, and must complete the 60-credit dissertation module.

Dissertation

You also undertake a substantial independent research project and dissertation, based around either a project from your workplace, or on industry-based case studies. This helps you understand how your learning applies in the real world. This aspect of your MSc requires you to reflect on the implementation of your project, and evaluate opportunities for improvement.

You will have academic and normally industrial sponsors for this, to help you put the project in the required context.

This type of project is attractive to employers, as it provides an opportunity to deal with a real issue efficiently and cost-effectively. Often, your project will have a significant effect on the business sponsoring it.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. If changes to your course are approved we will inform you.

Learning and Teaching

The learning methods and the structure of the course mean you will take an integrated view of an engineering enterprise by placing technology in strategic, financial, human and operational contexts. We encourage you to read around the subjects independently so you can really consolidate your knowledge and understanding while broadening your outlook and understanding of the key concepts.

Taught modules are usually held over three to five consecutive days, but can include distance learning and work-based learning in some cases. You organise the structure of your work-based learning with your module leader, to ensure it meets your needs and the learning outcomes are achievable.

For more details see our glossary of teaching and learning terms.

Study time

Each 15-credit module takes around 150 hours to complete. The overall course normally takes between two and five years to complete, as students are normally also in full-time employment.

Assessment

Assessment is normally by assignment. At this level, we don't test your understanding, we test your ability to implement your newfound skills and knowledge. Assignments are normally based on a real industrial case study, or a project in your workplace.

For more details see our full glossary of assessment terms.
