Summary
Introduction to basic psychological concepts. To analyse and apply concepts to individuals society. To develop skills in the use of research methods in Psychology.
About the Course
The course will be suitable for anyone interested in Psychology, but who are not qualified or who do not feel ready or confident enough to start on the Advanced Level course.Students will study a total of 12 topics split over 2 exams. First exam includes obedience/conformity (including 'why follow the orders of someone in authority'?), personal space (including 'is this affected by gender or culture'), phobias (including how we acquire them), aggression (including why we become aggressive), children's attachment (including 'do children need a maternal bond'?') and children's mental development (including why are children illogical and silly!?) Second exam includes morality (how do our morals develop), prejudice (including causes and how to reduce it) memory (including why we forget and how to improve memory), perception (look at some illusions!), stress (what causes it and how we develop a sense of being male or female.There is also a piece of coursework to complete which will involve designing and carrying out a study looking into some aspect of human behaviour, for example gender differences in phobias, who requires more personal space or can organisation of material help memory among lots of other ideas!

Two exam papers (40% core and 40% additional papers) and one piece of coursework (20%).

We do not recommend the purchase of books prior to starting the course. Reading material will be recommended once the course commences.
