Course programme

What you will study

You can study Psychology as either a joint, major or minor subject. This will determine how many modules you’ll study at each stage. Please check your other subject to ensure it is possible to create your chosen combination.

The modules you study at stages two and three will depend on whether you select Psychology as a major, joint, or minor subject.

Stage one

In your first year you'll study modules such as:
  • Skills and Careers in Psychology 1
  • Introduction to Biological and Developmental Psychology - This module explores how the brain works by investigating neural structures and neurons. It also introduces concepts and theories relevant to child development
  • Introduction to Social and Cognitive Psychology - This module introduces students to social psychology (the impact that other people have on what we think and do) and cognitive psychology (the mental processes that enable us to think and learn)
  • Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology - In this module you will learn how to design, conduct, analyse, and report qualitative and quantitative research in psychology
Stage two

If you major in Psychology from stage two onwards (to obtain GBC), you’ll study the following modules:
  • Skills and Careers in Psychology 2 - This module provides students with academic, careers, and employability support. It focuses on careers goals and personal development planning
  • Biological and Developmental Psychology - The Biological component explores links between the brain and various areas of behaviour. The Developmental component explores psychological theories of several areas of child development
  • Social and Cognitive Psychology
  • Quantitative Methods and Individual Differences - This module builds upon previous modules and gives you a deeper understanding of how to conduct research in psychology, particular relating to differences between individuals
  • Qualitative Methods: The Individual in Society - This module introduces a range of qualitative methodologies and explores the different insights these approaches bring to the area of individual differences
Stage three

If you are majoring in Psychology by Stage three (to obtain GBC), you’ll need to study the following module:
  • Independent Study in Psychology - Under academic supervision, students formulate meaningful psychological research questions and/or hypotheses, select appropriate methods, collect and analyse empirical data, and produce a scientific report
Optional modules:
  • Addictive Behaviours - The module examines how psychological theories can help understand addictions, including those involving both legal and illegal substances; and behavioural addictions not involving substance use
  • Atypical Language Development - Communication is at the heart of everything we do as humans. In this module, we explore how to support children whose language acquisition is atypical
  • Autism, Asperger's and ADHD
  • Clinical Applications of Psychology
  • Emotion in Context - Have you ever wondered to what extent emotion influences our daily functioning; from what we perceive, to the way we feel and/or perform, to the day-to-day decisions we make? If so then this module is for you – providing the scientific underpinnings of emotion
  • Family Health Across the Lifespan - This module takes a lifespan perspective to explore how psychological theory can be applied to understanding family experiences of health and illness
  • Forensic Applications of Psychology - The module gives students a thorough introduction to the application of psychology to our understanding of criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system
  • Human Behaviour and Evolution - This module explores the role of evolution and culture in explaining a diverse range of behaviours such as war, homosexuality, and religion
  • Neuropsychology - The purpose of the module is to try to explain what it is like to be without a cognitive facility. The module draws on real case studies to help explain the difficulty of drawing conclusions about the relationship between brain and behaviour
  • Schizophrenia - This module tackles the real problems faced by people who are suffering from schizophrenia
  • Psychology in Education
  • The Dark Side of Psychology
  • The Psychology of Pain - This module explores and integrates current theory and research in key areas of pain and pain management from a psychological perspective
