About this course

Psychology has a huge impact on all areas of life, including education, health, business, sport and the law, so your career scope will be broad and exciting. This degree not only gives you the scientific knowledge to explain human behaviour but also equips you with communication, IT and behavioural research skills that will prove invaluable wherever your future takes you.

On completing this course, our graduates have progressed into roles such as health service supervisor, assistant therapeutic care worker, mental health support worker, charity leadership, human resource management and scientific or clinical research.

Many, however, choose to use their qualification as a platform for further training to become a professional psychologist and our graduates are now succeeding in areas such as clinical and educational psychology.

GCSE Maths and English are preferred, however if you don't have these qualifications you will be able to undertake Maths and English at L2 as part of your course of study.

Stage one
  • Skills and Careers in Psychology 1
  • Introduction to Biological and Developmental Psychology - This module explores how the brain works by investigating neural structures and neurons. It also introduces concepts and theories relevant to child development
  • Introduction to Social and Cognitive Psychology - This module introduces students to social psychology (the impact that other people have on what we think and do) and cognitive psychology (the mental processes that enable us to think and learn)
  • Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology - In this module you will learn how to design, conduct, analyse, and report qualitative and quantitative research in psychology
  • Psychological Research in Practice - An introduction to conducting and reporting research in psychology, involving studies such as seeing whether swearing can reduce pain, and examining whether you are telepathic!
  • Does Psychology Matter? - This module explores the value of psychology in everyday life by exploring topics such as pre-natal screening, serial killers, body image and psychological screening
  • Psychology in the Modern World - This module explores psychological explanations for a diverse range of behaviours/concepts relevant to the modern world, e.g. Conspiracy Theory, Nature Connection and Hoarding
Stage two
  • Skills and Careers in Psychology 2 - This module provides students with academic, careers, and employability support. It focuses on careers goals and personal development planning
  • Biological Psychology and Developmental Psychology - The Biological component explores links between the brain and various areas of behaviour. The Developmental component explores psychological theories of several areas of child development
  • Social and Cognitive Psychology
  • Quantitative Methods and Individual Differences - This module builds upon previous modules and gives you a deeper understanding of how to conduct research in psychology, particular relating to differences between individuals
  • Qualitative Methods: The Individual in Society - This module introduces a range of qualitative methodologies and explores the different insights these approaches bring to the area of individual differences

  • Psychopathology: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Issues
  • Anomalistic Psychology and Parapsychology - This module covers the psychology of paranormal experiences and beliefs, including ghostly experiences, religious belief, and how and why people report such experiences
  • Cyber-psychology - This module explores the use of technology (e.g., smartphones, the Internet) on human behaviour and how psychological research and theory can help explain our interactions with technology
  • Philosophical Psychology - This module tackles the big questions that make your brain hurt; monism, dualism, consciousness, free will and determinism
  • Sport and Exercise Psychology - This module provides an overview of various sport and exercise psychology topics and focuses on how psychology can be used by practitioners to enhance performance and physical activity
  • The Psychology of Health - This module applies psychology to understanding and explaining our experience of health, ill-health (illness) and our engagement with healthcare systems
Industrial Placement Year (optional)

This course offers an ‘Industrial Placement Year’ giving you the opportunity to enhance your practical skills by putting theory into practice, network in your industry and stand-out in the graduate job market. The placement year takes place in your third year, once completed, you would return to University to complete your final year of studies.

  • Independent Study in Psychology - Under academic supervision, students formulate meaningful psychological research questions and/or hypotheses, select appropriate methods, collect and analyse empirical data, and produce a scientific report

  • Addictive Behaviours - The module examines how psychological theories can help understand addictions, including those involving both legal and illegal substances; and behavioural addictions not involving substance use
  • Autism, Asperger’s and ADHD
  • Atypical Language Development - Communication is at the heart of everything we do as humans. In this module, we explore how to support children whose language acquisition is atypical
  • Clinical Applications of Psychology
  • Emotion in Context - Have you ever wondered to what extent emotion influences our daily functioning; from what we perceive, to the way we feel and/or perform, to the day-to-day decisions we make? If so then this module is for you – providing the scientific underpinnings of emotion
  • Family Health Across the Lifespan - This module takes a lifespan perspective to explore how psychological theory can be applied to understanding family experiences of health and illness
  • Forensic Applications of Psychology - The module gives students a thorough introduction to the application of psychology to our understanding of criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system
  • Human Behaviour and Evolution - This module explores the role of evolution and culture in explaining a diverse range of behaviours such as war, homosexuality, and religion
  • Neuropsychology - The purpose of the module is to try to explain what it is like to be without a cognitive facility. The module draws on real case studies to help explain the difficulty of drawing conclusions about the relationship between brain and behaviour
  • Schizophrenia - This module tackles the real problems faced by people who are suffering from schizophrenia
