The psychotherapist works in the patient's behavioral, emotional, cognitive and affective sphere. It offers a specialized therapeutic path to the individual, the couple, the family and groups, always aimed at improving relationships and quality of life. After an evaluation and a classification of the status quo and an analysis of the real problem, he proposes and agrees short and long-term goals and supports his patients through an active and empathic listening to the experiences reported in the session, encouraging awareness of the most authentic needs and emotions. The psychotherapist is a graduate in psychology or medicine, also enrolled in the respective professional order (psychologists or doctors), who undertakes a specialization course in psychotherapy recognized by the state for at least 4 years. The psychotherapist is the only professional figure recognized by the State who can provide psychotherapy as a service, a professional competence that is not strictly linked to the skills of the psychological sciences and is strictly linked to the skills of the medical sciences in fact it does not require a degree in medicine. For the aforementioned reasons, psychotherapy is to be considered something "other", an area of relevance at least partially independent of both psychological and medical knowledge. In this sense, those who affirm that psychotherapists operate at a “deeper” level or “intervene by deeply restructuring the personality” or worse still “they are the only professionals who can operate in the presence of psychopathology” are mistaken compared to the intervention of the psychologist.
