Public health professionals can transform the lives of communities, families and individuals by supporting them in making changes that can boost their physical and mental wellbeing. This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the factors that can support or undermine people’s health.
Based at our Falmer campus in Brighton, the course provides a mix of classroom and community-based learning. This provides you with first hand experience of the challenges of protecting and promoting people’s health.
Our team of expert academics are all experienced public health professionals. They will help you gain the vital knowledge and experience required to submit your portfolio to become a registered public health professional with the UK Public Health Register.
This course has been designed using the UK Public Health Register Standards and The National Occupational Standards for Public Health.

Year 1

Modules
  • Introduction to Key Concepts in Health and Public Health

    This module will introduce you to public health and primary care and will form a foundation for many of the modules in year one and years two and three. The module will enable you to familiarise yourself with desk top and field work exploration of the factors that determine health, provision and access to health care, other public services and public and commercial amenities.

  • Study Skills for Health and Social Care Practice

    This module will develop your self-confidence and skills as an adult learner. The module will enable you to study in higher education by enabling you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and providing strategies to address these across a range of key skills.

  • Introduction to Public Health Ethics, Policy and Service Delivery

    This module will provide you with an overview of health and social care structures. It will also introduce relevant ethical and legal principals as well as the role of policy in design and delivery of services. The implications of this to improving and protecting the public’s health will be discussed. The emphasis will mainly be UK but other countries systems and policies will be referred to as appropriate.

  • Introduction to Health Needs Assessment

    Assessing health needs and tackling health inequalities are key aspects of public health work at the local, national and international level. Knowing the health needs of individuals, communities, and populations enables the allocation of appropriate resources and interventions. It also enables comparisons in health status, resources availability and inequality etc to be made between communities and populations.

  • Introduction to Public Health Research and Project Methods

    This module will introduce you to two key aspects of public health practice, the design and management of projects; and the nature generating evidence through research, audit and evaluation.

  • Anatomy and Physiology to Support Health and Social Care Practice

    In this module you will explore anatomy and physiology in relation to health and well-being of clients and patients across the lifespan. The module underpins and informs practice. You will apply an understanding of anatomy and physiology to your area of practice.
