Course programme

Course Overview
For those whose aim is to enter the uniformed services, including the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services, Armed Forces, Customs and Excise and other community/emergency related service organisations. It provides the skills, discipline and knowledge required to equip you for your career in Public Services. This qualification is roughly equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade A-C or an Intermediate GNVQ.

Course Structure
The course comprises six continually assessed units:

  • Uniformed Public Services Employment
  • Public Service Skills
  • Public Service Fitness
  • Workplace welfare
  • Land Map and Compass Skills
  • Expedition skills

Each unit is 60 hours.

The course consists of trips and at least one overnight camp. Students need to work as a team in developing their own and others- skills.

To succeed you will need to demonstrate a high level of discipline and communicate well. You will also need to be highly motivated and enthusiastic.
You will also study Maths, English and ICT if you do not already hold these to a GCSE grade C or above.

Qualification Aims
Entry to many sectors in Public Service is highly competitive and successful completion of the course will not serve as a guarantee for employment. However the course will develop the kind of self-discipline, teamwork and knowledge of service life that will impress any selection board or recruiter. Progression to the National Diploma in Public Service is possible with merits or distinctions.

Assessments/Examinations
A variety of assignments are set which comprise a mixture of written and practical assessments. Your final grade will depend on the final portfolio of evidence you produce to demonstrate your achievements. There is a high content of written work and physical work which students need to be prepared for.

Cost / Equipment
For students over 19 at the start of the course there will be a registration fee of approx£90.00.
Pens and paper are essential. Students will be compiling a portfolio, and therefore one, possibly two, heavy-duty ring binders are required.
For the expedition skills units students need warm and practical outdoor clothing, a fluorescent jacket, walking boots, stout shoes, a water resistant coat and suitable clothing. They will also be asked to camp overnight so a sleeping bag and eating utensils are essential.
For fitness and sports units, gym shoes and sports clothes are required and a contribution of£35 is required towards course materials.
A mandatory uniform will be available to purchase from the department (approx£27)
You may also require a passport. Help with essential equipment costs may be available to students who experience financial difficulties.
