Content
Learners will gain an in-depth understanding of the structure of the public service industry and gain the skills and knowledge for employment within this sector. The programme consists of 18 units such as: - Govenment Policies, Team Leadership, Citizenship, Team Development, Understanding Discipline, Diversity, Physical Preparation, International Perspectives, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Crime and Effects, Command and Control, Planning of Major Incidents, Responding to Emergency Incidents, Understanding Criminal Justice System and Police Powers, Understanding Behaviour, Communications and Technology, Aspect of the legal System.
Key Skills will also form part of your final qualifications. These are transferable skills which play an essential role in developing personal effectiveness for adult and working life. These are Communication; ICT and Numeracy.
Additionality
Learners will have the opportunity to gain other qualifications such as First Aid and Personal Safety Awareness as part of the course, learners will be required to participate in compulsory study visits and expeditions, and purchase a College polo shirt / t shirt. These costs will be confirmed at interview.
Assessment
Assessments are internally assessed by the course tutors and learners will be required to keep a Portfolio of Evidence of work. The method of learning is a mixture of both tutor led and practical sessions and learners are required to fully participate in both classroom based and practical activities. Practical activities include hill walking and rock climbing.
Practical fitness assessments are also involved.
Progression
This course offers a head start, perhaps in to a military career. Successful candidates on the National Diploma may progress to relevant degrees, such as law, sociology, emergency planning, politics and officer training and the new Foundation Degree in Police and Criminal Justice. A huge variety of possibilities can be discussed at interview with the course tutor. Career possibilities include the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Police, Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, Prison Service or Security Guards, Customs and Excise, Coast Guard and the Civil Service.
