This course is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications for a range of uniformed public sector organisations. It is assessed through exams, assignments, projects and case studies and consists of 2 core units, 2 mandatory units and 6 optional specialist units covering a variety of subjects relevant to working in the uniformed, as well as other non uniformed public services. Learners will also study the National Welsh Baccalaureate, which includes a range of topics and activities, including work and community placements and enterprise and sustainability tasks. Learners will also complete a specialist Project that is linked to their subject area. All students will be given the opportunity to develop their skills, and re-sit Mathematics or English GCSE if required.  Students wishing to re-sit Maths or English should have achieved a minimum D grade. There are many opportunities for learners to meet Public Service personnel from a variety of public services including the police, where they have the chance to role play as part of the police recruitment programme. They have in the past met the Marines, visited a RN Minesweeper and experienced practical and team building tasks with the Army, RAF, Marines and Fire and Rescue Service. There is also an annual Public Services competition where students compete with other Public Services learners from all over the UK.

About this course

Progression and Employment:
Successful completion of the course at merit level will enable students to progress to higher level courses such as Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Public Services or other Level 3 courses with a grade determined by the curriculum area.
It will also give learners the opportunity to progress to employment within a range of job roles across the public services sector, eg. the armed forces and emergency services.

Additional information

Method of Assessment Units are continuously assessed through projects, case studies and assignments. Two units will be assessed through examination set by BTEC.
