The aim of this programme is to develop your knowledge of working within the Uniformed Public Services.The qualification will prepare you for entry to one of the Public Services Professions. You will study a range of units that will develop your transferable skills, such as communication, problem solving, teamwork and independence. The skills that the course aims to develop will ensure that you are able to progress in to the world of work, or to university.

What modules are covered?

For the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services students must achieve 180 credits.

Year 1 

Government Policies and the Public Services - This unit enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the UK government policies and the democratic election process. It also enables them to demonstrate the process of developing government policies and how these policies impact on the public services.

Understanding Discipline in the Uniformed Public Services - Understanding Discipline within the Uniformed Public Services The aim of this unit is to enable you to develop an understanding of discipline and demonstrate self-discipline in the uniformed public services. You will develop a knowledge of conformity, obedience and the complex nature of authority.Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services -The aim of this unit is to enable learners to be able to provide advice on lifestyle improvement and plan a health-related fitness programme based on an understanding of the fitness requirements and major body systems in preparation for entry into the public services.

Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services - The aim of this unit is to provide learners with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to become thoughtful and informed citizens and public service employees. The unit is designed to develop an awareness of rights and responsibilities and respect for different religious, ethnic and national groups within UK society.

Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services - The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop a knowledge of leadership style and an understanding of teams and teamwork activities within the public services. Learners will also gain the skills needed to communicate with, and lead, teams.

Fitness Testing and Training for Uniformed Services - The aim of this unit is to enable learners to know the fitness requirements for entry into the uniformed public services and the different methods of fitness training. It also teaches learners how to plan, monitor and review a fitness training programme.

Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services -  The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop the knowledge and understanding of the command and control structure and for them to acquire the skills required to exercise command and control. 

Land Navigation by Map and Compass - The aim of this unit is to allow learners to acquire knowledge in relation to land navigation with map, compass and route card, and to demonstrate these skills practically in a safe manner. 

  Year 2

Crime and its Effect on Society - The aim of this unit is to give learners a knowledge of current UK crime and disorder legislation.Learners will also develop knowledge of the effects of criminal behaviour on communities and an understanding of how society works to reduce crime, disorder and antisocial behaviour and to support the victims and witnesses of crime.

Police Powers in the Public Services - This unit enables learners to develop an understanding of lawful arrests and detention and the regulations with regard to searching people and their premises. It also covers the powers the police have to grant bail.

Career Planning for the Public Services - This unit aims to enable learners to gain a knowledge and understanding of applying and preparing for a job in their chosen public service. The unit also enables learners to develop the skills needed in public services to prepare for an application process.

Exercise, Health and Lifestyle - The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to assess the lifestyle of an individual and provide advice on lifestyle improvement.

International Institutions and Human Rights – The aim of this unit is to enable learners to know the international institutions that impact on UK public services and understand how the UK works with these institutions to uphold human rights.

Understand the Impact of War, Conflict and Terrorism on Public Services - The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the impact of war and conflict on UK public services and how the public services deal with terrorism both within the UK and on the international scene.

Security Procedures in the Public Services - The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop the knowledge and understanding of the public services that seek to maintain the security of people, premises and property and the roles, purpose and power of those engaged in the security duties. Learners will also develop the skills needed to plan and carry out security searches in a simulated environment.

Practical Team Sports - The aim of this unit is to enable learners to explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of team sports through practical participation.

Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise - The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to design, plan, deliver and review exercise sessions which meet the needs of different client groups.

Planning and Management of Major Incidents - The aim of this unit is to provide learners with a knowledge of the effect of major incidents including the role of the public services, how the public services plan for such incidents and the ways in which the services manage major incidents. Learners will also develop skills in preparing for a particular major incident.

Extended Research in Public Services - The aim of this unit is to develop the skills needed to design and independently carry out an in-depth research project into a topic of personal interest from any area within the public services.

Academic and Personal Learner Advisor Sessions

All students receive full tutorial support, individual and group tutorials each week.  If you require additional support, you can receive such help through our Learning Support Centre, which provides academic coaching for those who need it.

Entrepreneurial Activities

Warwickshire College is committed to creating an Entrepreneurial College by creating work based opportunities within the industry.For example, students will have the opportunity to organise charity events, meet and work with people from the public services, such as Army Reserves and police, participate in volunteering activities, British Colleges for Sport and with other sporting groups.All of these activities will develop the students' skills and experience for university or work progressions..

How will I be assessed?

Written assignments, presentations both poster and oral, and synoptic end unit assessments, are all assessment techniques used on this programme.  The programme is continuously assessed and equivalent to three A Levels.  Each module carries three assessments which contribute to overall module grades at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What is the entry process?

Interview.

Applicants are encouraged to apply on-line, so that an interview can be arranged.  What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Five GCSE’s at Grade A* - C, to include English Language and a minimum of Entry Level 3 in Numeracy

or

BTEC Level 2  Diploma in a related area, with an overall Merit

A good school/college report containing evidence of attendance, good behaviour and attainment may also be asked for.

Applications are welcomed from mature students where other qualifications and work experience will be considered.

What else do I need to know?

Students must attend all aspects of the Study Programme, including Work Experience, Non-Qualification sessions, Enterprise Weeks and further study to gain a grade C, or above in English and Maths.

.Length of Course and Days of Attendance

The course is full time for 2 years.

Timetables will be between the hours of 9.am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, based on college terms. Students are not normally expected to take holiday during term time and they are encouraged to book medical appointments outside their timetabled lessons. Lessons are taught at our Rugby Centre with access to a gym, and outdoor/indoor sport facilities.

Fees

Students wishing to undertake the qualification who are aged over 19 years may be required to pay fees.

Uniform

All clothing to be paid for by the learner.  A College polo shirt is a requirement for the course and instructions on how to order this on-line, will be given when a place is offered on the course.

Students attending this qualification, must wear suitable sports and fitness wear for this course during practical activity and must wear trainers. In addition for health and safety reasons and industry expectations, students will be expected to remove jewellery during exercise. Any facial piercings or earings will need to be taped over, or removed during practical activity. Students are permitted to wear studs in the ears.


English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Fees

Course tuition fees are free for UK students under 19yrs.

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.

UK students aged 19 and over will need to pay tuition fees as well as any materials, registration and exam fees.Some adults may be eligible for free tuition.Please contact us for more fee information.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are 24 or over at start of this course, you can apply for a new loan to cover the course fees. There are no repayments until the course is completed and you are earning £21000 or more. Therefore if you earn up to £21000 a year there’s nothing to pay back. If you earn £22000 a year your loan repayments would be as little as £7 per month. Call us for more information.
