The pump engineer is the professional figure who works in the context of a petrol pump, an equipment used to refuel motor vehicles, mainly used in stations and service areas. In the 1920s a new, important innovation was introduced, which would have led to the replacement, between the 1930s and the 1950s, of the old manual distributors: the first electric pumps, which in the 1930s also became automatic. Equipped with an electric pumping system, the volumetric distributor pushed the fuel into a measuring chamber which activated a "clock" indicator, which showed the quantity delivered; the delivery was more precise and faster than the old manual pumps. A modern fuel dispenser is divided into two main parts: an electronic "head" containing a built-in computer, to control the pump action, operate the displays and communicate with the internal sales system; and a mechanical section equipped with an electric motor, pumping unit, meters and valves, to physically pump and control the flow of fuel. The header acts as an interface for the user; in the most modern models, it is also equipped with a payment system, which traditionally is instead entrusted to a separate column. In some cases the actual pump may be sealed and submerged within the fuel tanks, in which case it is known as an immersion pump. In general, in Europe this solution is adopted in warmer countries, where the suction pumps can have problems, or where the distance from the tank to the pump is longer than a suction pump could handle. In the mechanical section there are also a filter and an air separator, to remove gas and impurities from the fuel after aspiration from the underground tank.
