The Radio Production award is designed to give you an understanding of the broadcasting industry and how it works, alongside the skills you will need to make a successful career in radio.
At Level 4 you will learn the basics of both TV and radio, in theory and practice. From Level 5 you will concentrate on radio, with a greater proportion of practical work, gradually building up your knowledge, skills and understanding.
There is an opportunity in Levels 5 and 6 to specialise in music radio or to add drama to the speech mix.
Whichever you choose, you will be encouraged to join the university's student radio station, which broadcasts 12 hours a day on the campus network. This gives you an opportunity to practise presentation skills, interviewing, feature making and music programming and, potentially, to become part of the station's management team as your final year major project.
The practical skills you will learn include audio editing, writing for radio, music radio programming, presentation, interviewing, production and feature making.
Much of the teaching is designed to be as close to the experience of a real radio station as possible. Two hour interactive workshops will help you work in groups to produce short features and full length programmes. In the Level 6 module Programme Days you will work alongside Broadcast Journalism students to produce a typical day's local radio broadcasting.
You will also be expected to learn independently ' listening critically to a variety of stations, reading about radio and researching programme material. There are some formal lectures and seminars, usually illustrated with examples from broadcasts over the last ninety years.
Your learning will be enhanced and encouraged by regular feedback, both verbal and written, in groups and individually.
