A railway driver (also called driver, car staff or driver staff, abbreviated AdC, PdM and PdC) is the one who leads the traction unit of a railway train or train. The professional figure of the railway engineer is one of the oldest in the railway system; in fact it was born at the same time as the birth of the railway locomotive and since the first machine for traction of convoys was a steam engine, the driver was the one who was able to carry out all the operations necessary for its functioning. The railway driver is specialized in the conduct of railway rolling stock and both passenger and freight trains as a collaborator of a Railway Transport Company. His professional activities also include checking the functionality of the traction units, both in relation to the running of the trains and their compliance with the purpose; moreover, he must find the solution to technical problems of limited entity that may arise during his service and provide for the reporting of the most serious ones with a short technical report in the appropriate logbooks or plant to be carried out by the maintenance workshops. Its main activity takes place on rolling stock, while ancillary operations can take place in railway stations or locomotive depots.
