Course programme

A weekend to enjoy the unique experince of firing your own pots using this age-old Japanese technique in the saftey of the Arts Centre Courtyard. Raku is the fastest and possibly most dramatic method of firing ceramics in which biscuit ware is fired up to approximately 1000°C. in less than an hour - a normal glaze firing takes between 10-12 hours.

The weekend starts at 10am with an introduction to the technique by experienced potter Emma Johnstone, who says of the Raku process:

'I can never know exactly what will be created when my pots are exposed to the intense heat and smoke - each piece is a surprise, sometimes a delight, sometimes a disappointment. I relish this contrast between making and firing and I am content to relinquish control of part of the process over to chance.'

You can bring your own pots with you (full details will be given on request) or use our studios on 10th and 11th July to make your own (these will be untutored days) - studio use is included in the course fee as are all materials, glazes and firings as necessary. Tea, coffee and biscuits are is provided during the weekend, and we suggest you bring your own lunch.
