Reading Opera: texts libretti and music from Purcell to Stravinsky

This module examines operas based on literary works from a variety of difference nations (France, Britain, Russia, Germany, USA, Ancient Rome) that are significant in their own right. Our work will focus on the transformations of meaning and structure that take place as text is turned into libretto, and as libretto is set to music. The module will shed light on the relationship between music and text, and on the function that music plays in drama. Composers to be examined may include some or all of the following: Purcell, Bizet, Tchaikovsky, Massenet, Verdi, Puccini, Debussy, Berg and Stravinsky.

No prior knowledge of musical notation is necessary to take this module. It is intended to be of particular interest to those studying English literature and European modern languages, but is open to all with an interest in the relationship between music and drama.
