Course programme
The Faculty of Health and Social Care is well placed to develop and lead this innovative professional programme. Members of the planning team have considerable experience of implementing and teaching on masters-level courses. In addition, the team has a range and depth of experience in both service delivery and research in rehabilitation.
Members also have considerable experience in neurological rehabilitation and rehabilitation with older people, and have contributed or been responsible for service delivery in both acute and community environments, as well as the voluntary and independent sector.
There is specific expertise in the rehabilitation of individuals with stroke, dementia, acute brain injury, pain management, cardiac and chronic pulmonary disease, falls, progressive neurological disease and palliative care.
Course Content
You will focus on three main areas:
- Rehabilitation policy and practice
- Critical practice in rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation in context
You will gain an understanding of the complex areas of government policy in relation to rehabilitation, and will look at models of disability and rehabilitation and their influence on practice from the perspective of both the practitioner and the patient/client. You will also develop your leadership and critical reflection skills.
You will critically evaluate a research problem from the health and social care setting and develop a research project relevant to your own work context. A research-methods module will help you prepare for your research project.
Assessment
The course is assessed by a variety of different methods such as:
- Portfolio, in which the student will be expected to include: Learning contract agreed with educational mentor (for each year), an action plan, strengths weaknesses opportunities threats analyses, reflective diary documenting learning experiences, significant incidence reflective statements and annotated bibliographies relevant to research interests and work context.

- Oral presentations
- Written assignments
- Research proposals and project
- Poster presentations
Assessment is spread throughout the course, and there are no formal examinations.

Entry Requirements
The MSc in Rehabilitation has been designed for rehabilitation practitioners working in health and social care.
We expect to recruit from the following professional groups:

Applicants in the following categories may be offered admission to the course on satisfactory performance at interview and fulfilment of any conditions relating to study leave, finance and documentation:
- Graduates with a first degree in a relevant professional area and who have a minimum of two years' professional experience in health and social care.
- Qualified health and social care practitioners without first degrees that can demonstrate evidence of either a contribution to the development of practice or of appropriate other study. Non-graduates will be asked to provide evidence in the form of a written document of their contribution to practice within rehabilitation.
- Applicants for the part-time route should also provide evidence that they are employed in a health and social care context, in which their role is primarily rehabilitation.
- Graduates and qualified health and social care practitioners from overseas will also be considered for the part-time route provided they are employed in a suitable health and social care setting for the duration of the course.
The programme leader or a member of the course team will invite applicants who meet the admissions criteria for an interview.
