Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.

GCE AS Level in Religious Studies.
Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying Religious Studies at A2 Level. It may also count towards your UCAS points.
What will I study?
The focus of AS Level Religious Studies will be on Islam and students will be expected to show awareness that there are differing views on the topics and issues studied, either within Islam or within the scholarship of Islam. The two Units studied are:
Unit 1: Islam 1 (The Way of Submission)
Four topics are identified for study including:
1) The Qur'an,
2) The five pillars,
3) The doctrine of God
4) Key beliefs.
Unit 2: Islam 2. Four topics are identified for study including:
1) Pre-Islamic Arabia (the Jahiliyyah),
2) Makkah 610-622 CE,
3) Madinah 622-632 CE,
4) The death of the Prophet, and the emergence of the Caliphate and of the Sunni/Shi'a divide.
How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, class work, individual tutorials as well as personal study.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through examinations in January and June during the academic year.
