Climate change is driven largely by our reliance on fossil fuels. Setting fire to millions of years of stored carbon in a very short space of time is creating a greenhouse effect and altering our climate. The UN, UK and Scottish Governments have all outlined plans to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by moving to a low carbon economy. To achieve this we need to implement sustainable energy technologies in every part of our economy.

Course programme
What Will I Learn
You will study renewable energy systems, energy efficiency, the sustainable production and processing of crops, algae and wastes for bioenergy and bioproducts, eco-buildings, pollution control and waste management. Other modules include climate change, business management, and planning and environmental impact assessment.
How Will I Learn
Engineering workshops, laboratory classes, visits to companies and development sites and a study tour will develop your skills and understanding of the issues relating to the deployment of green technologies. You will also undertake case studies and research projects into topics of your choice.
Honours Projects
In your fourth year you will undertake your own research project in a subject which interests you, drawing together all that you have learnt on your course. Topics covered are varied: recent Honours Projects have investigated the use of household waste destined for anaerobic digestion, the culture of algae for energy and bioproducts, and the quality of woodchip fuel in the UK.
