Indicative content includes:

• The development of research in recent decades
• Evidence based practice professional development and research literacy
• Evaluate sources of professional practice and knowledge
• Systematic literature searching skills/data collection. Inclusion exclusion criteria
• Research literacy

• Quantitative methods, designs and approaches (scientific/objectivity)
• Qualitative methods, designs and approaches - ethnography, phenomenology, grounded theory, action research, case studies (constructivist/subjectivity)
• An introduction to mixed method approaches - using both paradigms for research design
• Action research and developing collaborative and participatory frameworks of inquiry and working in action learning sets
• Researching within organisations, networks and partnerships
• Concepts of hierarchy of evidence, best available evidence and the underpinning philosophies of research. Issues of rigour, trustworthiness, bias, usability and generalisability
• Ethical principles and their effects on the research process, participants and organisational protocols
• Methods of data collection: measurements, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, interviews, psychometric tests, observations, audits and use of existing data set
