Course programme
Level 7 Module - 30 credits
Module Code: 7FHH1083
Optional Module - MSc Respiratory Practice
Module Aim:
The aim of this module is to enable the student to develop proficiency in the interpretation of common respiratory investigations and critically analyse factors impinging upon the validity and accuracy of these investigations.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding:
Successful students will typically be able to:
1. Demonstrate a robust understanding of the nature of the more common respiratory investigations.
2. Synthesise evidence in order to critically evaluate the validity of common respiratory investigations.
Skills and attributes:
Successful students will typically be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to extrapolate information from the clinical history and assessment in order to predict the findings from selected investigations and suggest further investigations, where necessary.
2. Make critical comments and observations on the selected investigations and results obtained to research an accurate diagnosis.
3. Demonstrate the importance of involving patients in the clinical assessment and decision-making processes.
Module content
This module will address the principles underlying a number of respiratory investigations commonly undertaken in clinical practice. These will include spirometry, PEF monitoring, arterial and capillary blood gas analysis, x-ray, allergy testing via skin prick testing on Serum IgE and a variety of other tests. These will be discussed within the context of clinical scenarios and students will be encouraged to consider investigation results and differential diagnosis in the light of a patient’s clinical presentation in order to confirm an accurate diagnosis.
Module Assessment:
1 hour Examination
2,000 Written Assignment
Coursework : 100% Weighting: 50%
Exam: 100% Weighting: 50%
Students are expected to complete a 2,000 word written assignment in which they will analyse the investigation results pertaining to one patient of their choice. This should encompass a rationale for the investigation, the actual results, and a critical discussion of factors which may impinge upon the validity of the investigation and the impact this has on the diagnosis.
Plus
The one hour unseen examination which involves the student being presented with a choice of patient scenarios from which they would be expected to select one. This strategy will assess the student’s knowledge of a wider range of investigations and associated issues and their ability to apply theoretical principles and problem solve to reach informed conclusions.
Pre and Co Requisites:
Students studying on this module should have experience in history taking and clinical examination or have completed modules: 7FHH1082 (Respiratory Assessment) and/or 7FHH1084 Respiratory Examination.
Attendance requirements:
There are four study days timetabled into this 30 week module.
The module is run on a flexible learning basis supported by comprehensive course materials (including course packs and e-learning modes). Four structured study days will facilitate classroom-based workshops, lectures and discussions. In addition, student participation, interaction and peer support will be facilitated through the use of an electronic platform.
These approaches will enable students to reflect upon existing knowledge and skills, evaluate evidence, develop problem-solving skills and thus develop personal knowledge in this area of respiratory care.
