About this course

Ideally, maths and English GCSEs at grade 4/C or an equivalent qualification are required. In order to be selected for this apprenticeship, you will also need excellent communication skills and an ability to work with many different customers in a typical retail environment. Finally, you must have the drive to complete the demands of the apprenticeship course and become a qualified Retailer. You will also need to demonstrate commitment to learning while working and spending 20 of your working hours completing off-the-job training.

Year 1

The retailer apprenticeship programme will require you to develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours in a retail environment and achieve a series of standards to prove your competence in: knowing your customer, understanding the business, sales/promotion, marketing, financial requirements, legislation, product and service awareness, brand awareness, communication skills, team working and the customer experience.

This is portfolio-based and assessed in the workplace. This is delivered via e-learning and classroom delivery with support from your trainer assessor. You may also be offered additional support to complete functional skills if you haven t achieved a level 1 or 2 qualification in both maths and English.

Year 2

In the second year of the apprenticeship you will continue to develop your portfolio of evidence and prepare for your independent end point assessment.

Additional information

On programme assessment for this apprenticeship is largely via a portfolio of evidence gathered at work. You will be regularly visited at work by your Trainer Assessor from Leicester College, who will support your development of a portfolio, demonstrating learning and development activities with their application in the workplace. Towards the end of your course you will undertake an End Point Assessment process that includes: on demand test: 30 minutes on demand multiple choice test Scenario based questions. Practical observation: two-hour observation of the apprentice in the workplace by the independent end assessor, covering apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours for the Customer, Business, Communication and Brand Reputation elements of the standard. Professional discussion: 1 hour structured meeting Led by the independent end assessor, involving the apprentice and employer. Focusing on how you have performed during the apprenticeship and their overall achievement of the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the standard.
