This course will support your application for admission/re-admission to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) register as a Diagnostic Radiographer, as long as you meet the HCPC’s requirements.
If you’re returning to diagnostic radiography, this course is designed specifically to support you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to work in a dynamic and challenging healthcare environment
This course provides some formal study in the academic setting, studied alongside a supervised clinical placement, to provide a structured way to meet the HCPC return to practice requirements
First course in the UK to be approved by College of Radiographers.

About this course

This course will prepare you to confidently return to practice; supporting you to apply for admission/re-admission to the (HCPC) register as a Diagnostic Radiographer upon successful completion of the course, as long as you meet the HCPC’s requirements.

You will also be awarded 20 credits at Level 6 which you can contribute towards your future professional studies.

This module will be available to diagnostic radiographers from both plain film and other imaging modalities (with either a UK based DCR or BSc qualification), who have previously been registered with the HCPC but have not practised their profession for more than two years. It will also be available to individuals who may have qualified in the UK as a Diagnostic Radiographer with a DCR or BSc qualification, but then did not practice or register with the HCPC post qualification.

Course programme

What you will study

The Return to Practice course consists of one 20 credit module at level 6.

The course content has been designed in accordance with the HCPC return to practice requirements.

Theoretical 'Core Content' will focus on:

  • Study skills (including writing skills) and the use of information technology
  • Professional Statutory Regulatory Body (PSRB) requirements, applied law (including IR(ME)R and IRR99), contemporary health policy, patient safety and evidence base in relation to diagnostic radiography practice
  • Care and compassion related to all areas of practice
  • Use of simulation and scenarios to embed adaptive technique skills and problem solving abilities
  • Current professional issues in Diagnostic Radiography
  • An understanding of the current structure and organisation of the workforce within diagnostic radiography
  • Reflective practice and continued professional development.

Your clinical placement will give you the opportunity to consolidate and apply this knowledge, supporting you to re-establish clinical competency in a range of plain film radiographic techniques and diagnostic imaging procedures within your scope of practice.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to meet the following learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate appropriate professional and radiographic skills within a work-based portfolio
  • Implement effective reflection within the working environment
  • Apply underpinning theoretical concepts of radiography to current clinical practice.
