Course programme

We will work on a variety of ‘hands-on’ projects and challenge exercises to develop the attendee’s independence in applying these skills to build a range of advanced assemblies and hosted components. Written documentation and datasets will be provided.

As this is an advanced course, the user must be competent in creating the standard drawing and documentation appropriate to RIBA Stage D requirements in Revit Architecture 2009.

Upon completion, attendees will be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Distinguish in-place and component families
  • Insert component families
  • Establish ‘best practice’ file organisation and naming convention for Revit families
  • Distinguish profile and hosted families
  • List the Family Editor Interface items
  • Describe the function of each item
  • Describe the use of default F.E. views
  • Create/combine solids from the basic 3D geometry tools
  • Distinguish between solids from voids
  • Use the appropriate template for specific types of component families
  • Create simple to complex solids and void elements
  • Connect vertices
  • Place elements in relation to origin and reference planes and work planes
  • Constrain sketch geometry and solid elements to reference/work planes
  • Use void geometry as reference geometry
  • Work with model lines and view-specific symbolic lines
  • Flex the family to check behaviour
  • Use reference planes and dimensions to establish new work planes and apply parameters to drive geometry
  • Add object style subcategories to control display and material
  • Insert and constrain nested components
  • Link nested parameters to the host component parameters
  • Set the detail visibility level for components
  • Use formulas to link parameters
  • Explain the differences between family parameters and shared parameters
  • Add shared parameters to drive multiple families
  • Schedule Revit families and nested components using shared parameters
  • Apply conditional formulas to control parameter values
  • Nest shared families as subcomponents
  • Use reference lines, flip controls and angle parameters
  • Apply Is Reference property to reference planes for positioning control
