The roof, or more commonly roof (lately from the Latin verb tegere, or to cover), has the function of defining the upper part of the building and of preserving the internal environment from atmospheric agents and from the invasion of animals. The essential purpose of the roofs is to protect the buildings below from the rain, resist the stresses given by snow and wind and reduce the thermal dispersion of the building. The roof covering, which is the outer layer of the roofs, guarantees water tightness, while the load-bearing structure has the task of supporting the covering. The geometric shape of a roof, that is the roofing surface of a building, is determined by one or more inclined flat faces, called pitches or rains. The flat pitched roof is characterized by some elements: the ridge line, the eaves line, the hip line and the valley line. The supporting structure of pitched roofs can be made using various solutions: in structural wood, truss and steel profiles, truss and prestressed reinforced concrete panels and reinforced concrete floors.
