Course programme

The Unboxed Ruby on Rails course gives you an introduction to building web applications using the Rails framework for the Ruby programming language. The course assumes that you already program and know about web technologies such as HTML and CSS, but assumes that you haven't looked at Ruby or Rails in detail before. You'll learn about Ruby, what a Rails application looks like and how to go about building your own applications. Throughout the course, we also stress doing things ‘the right way’ to ensure your Rails projects are well developed and maintainable. Some of ‘the right way’ topics that we cover include:

  • Building applications according to RESTful principles
  • Test driven design using Test::Unit
  • Behaviour driven design using RSpec and Cucumber
  • Source control using Git
  • Re-using code via ruby gems
  • Making contributions back to the community with open source software.

Bring along your laptop and we'll get you all setup to start programming in Ruby on Rails.

Who should attend: web programmers who are familiar with HTML and CSS, but who haven’t used Ruby on Rails before.
