If you haven’t studied the Russian language before, this degree will combine intensive language learning with the chance to study Russian culture, history and politics. You’ll develop spoken and written Russian skills and gain an insight into life in this vast and diverse country.
Core modules will allow you to build your language skills and introduce you to key aspects of Russian culture, such as music, literature or the nation’s modern history. You’ll also choose optional modules to pursue your own interests, from Fyodor Dostoevsky to culture under the Soviet regime and gender identity in Russian society. You’ll even spend a year at a Russian university to gain first-hand experience.
With an active student-led Slavonic society and much of our teaching conducted by native Russian speakers, Leeds is home to a strong community of individuals with an interest in Russian and Slavonic studies. It’s a great environment in which to explore a unique part of the world.
Leeds has great facilities to support language students, with digital language labs, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in our fully-equipped Language Centre.
If you’re interested in translation studies, we also offer specialised computing facilities in our Electronic Resource Information Centre. Our Interpreter Training Suites also offer you the chance to explore a career in interpreting.

Course programme

In this degree, you will study Russian at beginners’ level. If you already have some knowledge of the language, you may wish to apply for the advanced course, BA Russian A.

Your first year will introduce you to the Russian language, as well as aspects of the nation’s cultural history and literature. This will allow you to build language skills and a level of cultural awareness, which you’ll then cultivate during a year at a Russian university.

When you come back to the UK, you’ll have improved language skills and a fresh perspective to bring to your studies. You’ll take advanced core language modules to refine your spoken and written Russian, while you’ll also choose from a range of optional modules to explore topics such as Russian media and literature, or practical skills such as translation.

Throughout your studies, you’ll develop critical, research and communication skills, which you’ll put into practice in your final year when you produce an independently researched dissertation.
