You will have the theoretical skills to be able to go out In familiar waters in sensible weather conditions, cruise, stay overnight in another harbour, anchor for lunch, prepare the vessel for sea and manage your crew. Suitable for: Complete novices. People who have done some yachting or been to sea in a vessel but not had the chance to take charge. Partners of more experienced sailors often join us, wanting to do more than be a crew. If you are planning on the RYA Day Skipper Practical this is the course that provides the grounding.
About this course
There are really no requirements. If you have any concern about your ability to do the course, call us and talk it over. We welcome people who have done a competent crew course, but don't worry if you have never been on a motor or sailing yacht before. We are able to bring you up to speed quickly because of the small class size.

Rupert Emerson
Principal
Rupert Emerson has been sailing dinghies all his life and yachts for several years. He has sailed around Britain - see www.kippatravels.com. He is a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster and Cruising Instructor.
Course programme
The format is 12 evenings. The RYA Day Skipper course is great for people who have had limited time at sea. It is an opportunity to learn about navigation, weather, safety, tides, charts and skippering a motor or sailing yacht. The style of course delivery is interactive. There is group discussion, individual work that is fully supported by your enthusiastic tutor and projects where you learn in pairs or threes. All ages from 18 to 80 enjoy the course because everyone's knowledge is shared and developed. The whole concept is very different from the old-fashioned adult education evening class where you sit behind desks in a class room staring at a board or screen getting thoroughly bored. It is professional, but it is fun too so you learn much more than you expect.
Additional information
We are usually around 4 to 6 in class. The maximum is 8. This provides the maximum opportunity for individual attention.
