"Sandblasting is a specific finish that enhances the natural look of the stones. The treatment tends not to change the flatness of the stone but at the same time creates an effect similar to bush hammering but with lower costs and a faster result. Sandblasting is particularly used together with shiny elements in design objects. Sandblasting is particularly used for precision interventions such as on small areas or those difficult to reach and for decorative elements. The term sandblasting can also be used in technology, as a mechanical process by which the most superficial part of a material is eroded by abrasion due to a jet of sand and air. By far the most frequent use is for surface cleaning of metals, however it can also be used for engraving inscriptions and images on marble and stone. In the mechanical field, sandblasting is an intermediate procedure to the product processing cycle, only rarely is it carried out as a final operation. The removed layer can be oxide, paint, calcifications, a galvanic or plastic coating, etc. At the end of the operation, the material underlying the removed layer is completely uncovered and with a roughness depending on the size of the grit used and the pressure of the jet, but in any case very accentuated compared to the typical values of mechanical processing. Sandblasting is therefore one of the preferred procedures for preparing the piece for subsequent painting. Sandblasting is typically carried out on steel, cast iron, metal alloys in general, timber, ceramics, stone and marble; for both mechanical and construction industrial use. Sandblasting is also used for the destruction of data contained in hard disks or CD-ROMs. This is one of the safest ways to prevent particular programs from recovering data from damaged media. After completing the accounting records of the transactions performed, the banks periodically carry out a sandblasting of the CDs that store the financial transactions.
