Anyone in Italy who intends to build and market scaffolding must obtain an authorization booklet from the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Policies. The scaffolding, even if built in compliance with current legislation and ministerial circulars, must subsequently be subjected, in specialized laboratories, to load tests on all or part of the elements it consists of. If the results of the tests are compliant, the Ministry issues the constructor the authorization to build the scaffolding. The scaffolding is a reticular structure, for temporary use, usually provided with decks. Until the early twentieth century the load-bearing structures were made of structural wood (among the most famous scaffolding is the one made by Michelangelo for the construction of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican), while the modern ones are almost all made of steel and sometimes in aluminum. The decks can be made up of wooden boards (which are called bridges) or steel regardless of the material with which the load-bearing structure is built. In Asian countries, bamboo structures are also used.
