On this apprenticeship you will learn how to provide support in the classroom. The learning support staff work with teachers to support their work, you will carry out duties like lesson preparation, and work with small groups or individuals. As an apprentice, you’ll work under the close supervision of a class teacher who will help you learn the ways in which teachers and schools operate. The duties you will be expected to carry out will vary upon the school and teacher you work with but could include:• supervising arts and crafts activities• helping with outings• reading to the class• supporting children in learning
About this course
Entry criteria varies depending on the framework that you are studying and the needs of the employer, however a good level of secondary education is expected and many employers expect you to have maths and English GCSE at a C grade or above. Employers also look for skills like motivation, good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn.

Course programme
You could progress onto an advanced apprenticeship or find employment. The advanced level apprenticeship adds more responsibility to the role. You could help plan, carry out and evaluate a wide range of learning activities. It’s a good stepping stone to a foundation degree or higher level teaching assistant training.

Students in the Professional Services Academy will have the opportunity to take part in:

Guest lectures from business leaders within our partner organisations and workshops to help expand your business knowledge and awareness

A mentor programme where all students receive one-to-one guidance and support from professionals in the sector

A range of visits to the Academy’s partner businesses, to gain an insight into how they are shaping the professional services sector

Free membership of Birmingham Aspire – a network of young professionals aged 16-24 who are considering a career in Professional Services

Real work experience through an internship programme between the first and second year of your studies.
