Some students will progress to level 3 BTEC in Applied Science. Some students join this course because it is a necessity for their chosen career path e.g. primary school teaching.




You will require a grade D at GCSE Science / Additional Science in order to be enrolled on to this course, otherwise you will be considered upon your individual merits.

Course programme

The AQA GCSE (4405 specification A, Route 1) Core Science course involves three units of study:

  • The Physics unit centres upon heat and energy, electricity, waves, radioactivity and the universe;
  • The Biology unit develops ideas about keeping healthy and body changes. It moves on to drug use and abuse, habitats and variations in species, it also deals with the impact of humans on the environment;
  • The Chemistry unit examines rocks, fuels, polymers plant oils, the earth and its atmosphere.

Course Assessment Method

Assessment is carried out both internally and externally.

External assessment centres upon 3 unit exams which contribute 25% each plus a practical ISA which involves an experiment alongside a short test based upon the experiment which also represents 25% of the GCSE. All written external exams are carried out in May-June. Internal assessments are carried out on a regular basis.
