Course programme
The course covers elements of physics, chemistry and biology and it is divided into two examined papers and a coursework module. The course follows the AQA syllabus A and both examined papers will be taken in June 2016. The coursework will take the form of an "ISI" (Investigative Skills Assignment). This will be done under direct supervision with the tutor and internally marked by the tutor and externally moderated.
What modules are covered?Unit 1
The Biology content covers:
The health of the human body, co-ordination and control and a topic on medicine and drugs.
The Chemistry content includes:
Fundamental ideas (all about the atom): rocks and building materials; metals and their uses and the first half of a topic on crude oil and fuels.
The Physics content include:
Energy transfer by heating; using energy and electrical energy (this involves looking at the types and cost of running different appliances.
Unit 2
The Biology content includes:
Adaptation for survival; energy in biomass, variation, reproduction and new technology and evolution
The Chemistry content includes:
Products from crude oil; plant oils and our changing planet
The Physics content includes:
Generating electricity; waves and electromagnetic waves
What qualifications will I get?GCSE Science
How will I be assessed?There are two examined units. Each will consist of 90 minute exams comprising short answer questions as well as one longer levelled question. You will be entered for the Foundation (targeting grades G - C) or the Higher Paper (targeting grade C-A*) depending on the discretion of the tutor.
