This is a practical, work related course which will prepare you for a career in science or to progress to further study. This Diploma is ideally suited to people who have not achieved a grade C in GCSE Science but who wish to pursue Science-related careers. Covering a balance of topics from the different science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), mathematical, communication skills and practical laboratory skills, this course is excellent preparation for a range of future options in work or further study.

About this course

You'll need 4 GCSEs at grade D or above including Science, English and Maths or a BTEC in Applied Science Level 1 or Double Award with Functional Skills at Level 1. You will need to undertake an initial assessment to determine your level. You will also work towards improving your English and Maths Skills through a GCSE or Functional Skills whilst you study this course.

Course programme

What will I study on the course?

This course offers students the opportunity to study practical and work-related science topics supporting progress to a wide choice of courses at level 3. You will get hands on experience to develop your scientific skills in our new STEM Centre laboratory opening in 2017. You will learn to identify and analyse solutions and compounds in chemistry, undertake experiments investigating force, mass or electronics in physics. In biology you will learn about foods, grow cultures, test plant tissue for DNA and look at disease. You will study a range of mandatory science subjects, together with some specialist options such as; biology and our environment, applications of chemical substances, working in the science industry, scientific investigation, the living body and investigating a crime scene. You will also attend English and maths classes as part of the programme and have weekly tutorials to support you.
